Impact:
English
Southfield School uses standardised tests at both the start and end of Year 7 for English. The students sit Progress Test 11T in English at the start of Year 7 and then Progress Test 12 in English at the end of Year 7.
This is supplemented by the use of internal assessments within English.
The students who qualified for Catch Up Reading and attended the intervention sessions made more progress than those who qualify as Catch Up Reading but did not attend the intervention sessions. Using the Progress Tests in English results, the improvement in scores for the Catch Up students, who attended the intervention sessions, was 0.71 higher than those who did not attend.
Student feedback was obtained from a sample of 10 students who received the Letterbox package. Seven students gave positive reviews, for example one student said “it was amazing” and another said “I think the letterbox package was helpful and I enjoyed it”. One student gave negative feedback saying that they didn’t think the Letterbox package was suitable for them.
Using an online reading age assessment package, students in Year 7 had their reading ages tested. This assessment was done at the beginning of the year and the end of the year. A similar percentage of Catch Up students and Non-Catch Up made an improvement in their reading age (57%). A greater percentage of students’, who do not qualify for Catch Up Reading, reading ages dropped than those who do qualify as Catch Up Reading.
Case Study: Student A struggled to read the lower level skills books in September, at the start of the school. She also lacked confidence in reading aloud and sharing her thoughts on books with other students. By the end of the year Student A was able to read chaptered books, at a much higher skill level. In addition to this she was discussing the content of the books with the rest of the group much more confidently.
Maths
Southfield School uses standardised tests at both the start and end of Year 7 for Maths. The students sit Progress Test 11T in Maths at the start of Year 7 and then Progress Test 12 in Maths at the end of Year 7.

The students who qualified for Catch Up Maths, and whose attendance was greater than average for the intervention sessions, made more progress than those who qualify as Catch Up Maths, but attended less than the average number of these sessions. Using the Progress Tests in Maths results, the tables below shows this improvement.
